The project involves:
• the expansion of the existing shipping channel and shipping swing basins, which will result in the lengthening of the existing channel;
• the expansion of the existing dredge material placement area;
• the establishment of a new shipping swing basin to support future expansion of the HMAS Cairns navy base;
• the structural upgrade of the existing cruise shipping wharves one to five to accommodate larger and heavier cruise ships; and
• the provision and upgrade of services to the wharves, including fuel supply, potable water and firefighting services.

The process of developing an environmental-impact statement (EIS) for the Cairns shipping development project is under way, with lead consultant Arup, in partnership with BMT WBM, working with Ports North to develop a comprehensive EIS to meet the requirements of the state and federal governments.
There will be ongoing consultation with the community and government agencies during development of the EIS.
