Brick and paving manufacturer Corobrik’s Cape Town office reports it has completed supplying over seven projects for the City of Cape Town metropolitan municipality this year and expects to complete supplying another five projects for the municipality in the first quarter of 2015.

The company provided bricks and paving for projects that included the integrated rapid transport system, the non-motorised transport system, the Bloemhof electrical depot in Belville, the Brackenfell training centre in Brackenfell, the Atlantis electrical depot in Atlantis, the Ndabeni electrical storage yard and electrical depot in Maitland.

Ongoing projects include the Belville waste management facility, the Khayelitsha shared service centre, the Nomzamo clinic in Strand, the Delft community day centre, and the Kuyasa library in Khayelitsha.

“Most of the projects have been secured on careful consideration, as the City of Cape Town advocates low maintenance on public buildings. Using our eco-friendly face bricks is a way of achieving this,” Corobrik points out.

Meanwhile, the company notes that with the City of Cape Town entering the gap housing market, the company “sees potential in this particular market, after the successful use of its products in various cost sensitive social housing developments”.

‘Gap housing’ is a term used to describe the shortfall, or ‘gap’ in the market between residential units supplied by the State and houses delivered by the private sector, the City of Cape Town notes on its gap housing website.

To deliver more housing opportunities to communities, the City of Cape Town has analysed this gap in housing supply and devised a strategy to start filling it. “The strategy induces the private sector to supply housing units at lower prices, while simultaneously encouraging low-income, employed individuals to build their own houses,” the city reports.

Further, Corobrik Gauteng is supplying the brickwork for the Vila Lisa clinic in Palm Ridge and a fire station in Katlehong. The Ekurhuleni metropolitan municipality awarded the specification to Corobrik in July 2013 and March this year. Corobrik expects to complete supplying these projects in mid-June and at the beginning of July this year.

Meanwhile, Corobrik was awarded the Diamond Arrow Award in April for the fourth consecutive year after survey respondents in the construction industry rated the brick supplier “ahead of the pack”.

Consulting, research and risk management services PMR.africa presented the award to Corobrik. PMR.africa undertook the survey from October 2013 to January, rating brick suppliers in 11 categories, ranging from the ability to meet orders, flexibility and competitive pricing, to the quality, environmental compliance and variety of products on offer.
