The project entails the construction of 28-turbine wind farm, with an installed capacity of between 56 MW and 84 MW, on land managed by Forestry Commission Wales on behalf of the Welsh Ministers.

It is estimated that the average yearly generation expected at the site could be equivalent to the domestic needs of about 39 700 average UK households each year.

The new planning process for determining Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects has granted consent for the up to 84 MW Brechfa Forest West wind farm – the first onshore wind farm to be approved in the UK through this new process.

The decision was reached following a detailed examination process, managed by the Planning Inspectorate’s National Infrastructure Directorate.
