PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed junior Pioneer Resources has reported an initial mineral resource estimate of 222 710 t of nickel sulphide at its Blair nickel mine, in Western Australia.

Grading 2.92% nickel, the project is expected to deliver 6 510 t of nickel metal.

Pioneer MD David Crook said that the resource estimate provided an excellent base for the company from which to grow.

“The company is aware that a number of commodity forecasters are predicting an improvement in the nickel price within the next few years, and Pioneer is looking to develop a robust production scenario, and, therefore, be ideally leveraged for a return to higher nickel prices,” he said.

Some 75 560 t of the resource is classified as indicated, with the balance in the inferred category.

Pioneer has identified a number of potential opportunities to grow the resource, including down-plunge extensions to the mineral resource, as well as a number of near-mine exploration targets along the base of the ultramafic host-rock contact.
