Bids sought for new Drakensberg hotel development
The KwaZulu-Natal Nature Conservation board has invited expressions of interest from service providers in the hospitality industry for the development and management of a new hotel and conference centre in the Royal Natal National Park (RNNP), in the northern Drakensberg mountains.
The scope of the tender involves the development, construction and operation of the facility in a public–private partnership with Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife, which manages the park.
The first phase of the project will entail the construction of a visitors' center, conference facility, lodge, chalets and restaurant, while the second phase will require the construction of the RNNP Hotel.
The Thendele Resort is currently the only chalet accommodation in the park.
Ezemvelo said it would shortly undertake a competitive bidding exercise and intended to issue a request for proposal to those companies that expressed interest and demonstrated their ability to fulfill the project requirements.
“Parties will have to prove that a special purpose vehicle has been set up for the sole purpose of implementing this project,” the board noted, adding that the bid would be awarded for a fixed period.
Qualifying parties had until August 14 to submit their expressions of interest.
The RNNP features the Drakensberg Amphitheatre and the 948-m Tugela Falls, which is one of the world’s highest waterfalls, and forms part of the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site.
