PERTH (miningweekly.com) – A feasibility study for the Stage 1 operation at gold miner Besra’s Bau project, in Malaysia, has identified that the project could be in production by late 2015.

With a capital investment of about $134.8-million, the Bau project could deliver 116 000 oz/y of gold.

“The release of the Stage 1 feasibility study confirms that this is an exciting and economically viable project,” said Besra CEO John Seton.

The Stage 1 operation would have a net present value of more than $48.3-million and an internal rate of return of 25.4%. The project has a current Joint Ore Reserves Committee-compliant resource of 21.2-million tonnes, grading 1.64 g/t gold for 1.12-million ounces of measured and indicated resource.

Seton pointed out that the feasibility study only covered the first stage of a sizable multi-mine project with significant potential for expansion over a number of years.

“We have already commenced prefeasibility studies on adjacent deposits to increase mine life to ten years. The 15-km-long Bau goldfield is open along strike and at depth at almost every deposit,” he added.

Exploration was also at a relatively early stage, said Seton, with multiple deposits at various stages of exploration development and several prospective zones as yet entirely unexplored.

The remainder of the Bau goldfield has 36 prospects or known deposits, which were at an inferred level, or which had suitable geological potential and would require an extensive amount of follow-up work, he added.
