Name of the project and location
Baynes hydroelectric power station, Namibia and Angola.

Project description
Namibia and Angola plan to revisit a project to build a hydropower station on the Kunene river, which is shared by Namibia and Angola.

The project was first mooted in the 1990s, but did not take off despite many years of discussions.

The project is expected to generate 360 MW of power.

Value
The cost of the project, based on a feasibility study done in 1998, was $266-million. This cost will, however, as part of the first phase of planning, have to be revised owing to inflationary and other economic factors.

Duration
Should the project go ahead, it is expected to take up to ten years to complete.

Breakdown of main contracts
None stated.

Client
NamPower and Empresa Nacional de Electricidade (ENE).

Latest developments
Namibia and Angola recently signed a bilateral agreement regarding the project.

A delegation of technical experts from NamPower, NamWater and a director from the Ministry of Mines and Energy will travel to Angola to look at ways of developing the new power project and the bilateral agreement that was signed by the two countries.

Participants
NamWater.
