AngloGold assesses earthquake damage, no fatalities reported
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – AngloGold Ashanti on Wednesday said it had halted underground activities at two of its mines while thorough examinations were undertaken of the infrastructure following a 5.5 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday.
All of the 3 300 workers underground at the Great Noligwa and Moab Khotsong mines during the seismic event, which originated from the North West province, were successfully hoisted to safety.
AngloGold Ashanti South Africa COO Mike O’Hare said 28 employees were treated for minor injuries and discharged, with 17 employees assisted by counsellors for shock.
The company would now await the “appropriate” underground conditions to undertake thorough assessments. The inspection crews would examine all underground infrastructure, including ore passes, haulages and working areas.
AngloGold engineers and specialists and external seismology experts continued intensive, real-time monitoring of seismic activity in the region.
“Once it is clear that we have the correct power feed and underground areas and infrastructure are deemed safe, a decision will be made on resuming normal shifts,” O’Hare said.
The mining company remained in contact with engineers from State-owned power utility Eskom to establish when fully redundant electricity supply would be restored.
AngloGold’s West Wits operating region and the Kopanang mine in the Vaal River area were not affected.
O’Hare said a more detailed update on the status of the underground operations would be provided on Monday.
