Anglo sheds 45 jobs as NSW coal mine runs out of mineable reserves
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Diversified miner Anglo American on Monday confirmed that it would lay off 45 staff members at its Drayton coal mine, in New South Wales, following a review of the remaining resources.
Anglo executive head of opencut mining Mark Heaton said that the company had reviewed the current reserves in Drayton, and had concluded that a reduction in staff numbers was unavoidable at this time.
The 30-year-old mine was expected to run out of mineable coal reserves this year, after the New South Wales Planning and Assessment Committee (PAC) twice decided not to approve an expansion of the Drayton mine, dubbed the Drayton South.
“We had hoped the Drayton South project would have given smooth continuity of employment for our 500 workers and 140 local suppliers. However, we now find ourselves in the difficult position of balancing depleting coal levels with extending the mine’s life for as long as possible, without approval for Drayton South,” Heaton said.
He added that the redundant positions would be subject to business needs and would be determined through full consultation with employees and employee representatives.
Anglo American is currently developing a new mine plan for the Drayton South project, following the PAC’s last rejection. The new mine plan is expected to wipe away A$7-billion of coal revenue, and will reduce the life of the operation from 27 years to 15 years.
The expected total tonnage from the mine has been reduced from a projected 189-million tonnes to only 75-million tonnes.
Heaton said on Monday that the company would persevere to secure approval for the revised mine plan.
