JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Mining major Anglo American has announced the retirement of human resources and corporate affairs group director Mervyn Walker, with effect from June 30.

In a statement on Monday, CEO Mark Cutifani thanked Walker for his contribution to the company and, in particular, for ensuring a “smooth and effective transition” as Cutifani took up his role as CEO last year.

“Mervyn has provided me with strong support and sage advice and he will see through the implementation of our new organisational structure over the next three months. We wish him a happy and fulfilling retirement,” he said.

Walker added that the completion of the group’s new organisational structure in June would mark the “right moment” for him to retire.

“The quality and values of Anglo American’s people and the way they engage, whether with one another or with our myriad of stakeholders, is one of our company’s strong differentiating factors. I have enjoyed working with so many of those people and wish them the very best for the future,” he commented.

Walker’s successor would be announced “in due course”.
