The African National Congress (ANC) on Friday said it would postpone its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Saturday, as supporters of former President Jacob Zuma gather in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

Earlier this week, the Constitutional Court sentenced Zuma to 15 months in prison for contempt of court for failing to appear at the Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture in February.

He is expected to hand himself over to the Durban-Westville correctional services center by Sunday, a timeframe set by the court.

Zuma’s foundation has said that the former President would address supporters this weekend.

Zuma supporters, particularly the Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans' Association, have adamantly stated they would defend Zuma against any threat.

ANC NEC members were due to discuss the Constitutional Court judgment at this weekend’s meeting.

Following the handing down of the judgment the ANC called for calm among its members.

In a statement on Friday, the ANC said NEC members would be deployed to KZN and work with provincial leadership.

A new date for the NEC meeting will be communicated.

“In arriving at this decision the National Officials were mindful of the situation developing in KwaZulu-Natal and the need for the ANC to give clear and principled leadership to ensure the maintenance of the rule of law and to avoid any violence, injury, or loss of life,” the party said.
