Electrical engineering and manufacturing company Ampcontrol Africa on Friday officially opened its new 10 000 m2 engineering and manufacturing facility, in Boksburg, with the facility expected to be the backbone of the company’s future growth.

Market diversification was a large part of Ampcontrol’s business strategy, with Ampcontrol having recognised the large potential of the South African mining market and the positive synergies between the Australian and South African industries and cultures.

The company said that, through the opening of this facility, its South African customers would benefit from faster lead times, higher quality products and Ampcontrol’s capability to manufacture a wider range of products, such as gas-filled transformers, as well as to assemble mining protection electronics to local specifications.

“It also enables Ampcontrol to produce greater volume and get involved in bigger projects, such as full electrical systems and vast electrical support services and overhauls.”

More than 130 technical, manufacturing and professional staff would be employed in Boksburg.

Further, Ampcontrol said it had recently established a development trust, which enabled it to further the training and skills development of its staff, through basic National Qualification Framework 1 six-month numeracy and literacy courses, while an open apprentice training school that would include work-based skills training would be established next year.

Ampcontrol also had an internship programme with three graduates interning in the electrical and mechanical engineering fields.

In addition to the newly established Boksburg site, Ampcontrol operated sites in Botswana, Australia, China, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Russia, the UK and the US.
