Set-top box (STB) developer and manufacturer Allied Technology (Altech) UEC completed a R50-million expansion of its manufacturing facility in Durban to ensure the company meets the continuing demand for terrestrial STBs, satellite decoders and smart TVs.

The expansion of the Altech subsidiary’s factory created 120 specialised and sustainable jobs and doubled STB manufacturing capacity to six-million a year.

The investment into the KwaZulu-Natal-based manufacturing facility, which was launched in August 2011, positioned UEC to meet current and future STB and Smart TV demand with the installation of “state-of-the-art” electronics assembly equipment, said Altech UEC manufacturing executive Rajesh Ramkawal.

The firm installed the Panasonic surface mount technology solution, an electronics assembly manufacturing solution that ensured high quality and on-time delivery, as well as the Panasonic next production modular, which was an advanced process intelligence system allowing for zero board transfer time, smart feeder monitoring and a 400 000 component-an-hour placement capability.

The company had also installed a low-power-consuming plastic injection-moulding machine with robotic-controlled extraction for the plastic casings of the STBs.
