A Competition Tribunal-approved amended settlement agreement between the Competition Commission and Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) would see the airport operator issue a new tender for taxi services from the OR Tambo International Airport and initiate more competition between taxi operators.

An investigation by the Competition Commission had found the airport operator in violation of the Competition Act by allowing the OR Tambo International Airport Taxi Association exclusive access to operate metered taxi services at the Johannesburg-based airport.

This followed a complaint from the Sisonke Taxi Association.

ACSA was now required to reissue a new tender or invitation to tender – within six months of the confirmation of the settlement agreement – to individual metered taxi operators for a period of five years.

The company was also expected to develop a more competitive process for selecting metered taxi services, as well as introduce measures allowing shuttle services to compete directly with metered taxi services.
