8ta to be PSL official mobile partner
JSE-listed telecommunications group Telkom’s mobile offshoot 8ta was set to reach an audience of millions, as it becomes the official mobile partner for the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
The new five-year contract would enable the mobile operator to reposition and build the image of the 8ta brand, while developing and promoting innovative new products to South Africa’s football community.
PSL acting CEO Cambridge Mokanyane said on Wednesday that football offered a viable business platform or channel for partners, suppliers and sponsors to connect to consumers.
He pointed out that the PSL, which hosted over 500 matches a year, including 270-odd live broadcasts, held a cumulative audience in South Africa of over 600-million over the past year.
The partnership would “bank revenue” for 8ta, as it connected with the passion of its potential consumers and would be a “game-changer” for the telecommunications firm.
8ta, in turn, would be responsible for creating a new era of engagement and bridging the gap between the football community and the PSL, said Telkom MD for consumer and retail services Manelisa Mavuso.
8ta would roll out several initiatives for soccer fans to ensure a “commitment” to the game and an interactive engagement with the sport.
The mobile operator would implement additional mobile platforms, mobile payment offerings, fan community tools, including a content-sharing web portal, and wi-fi access at the stadium, as well as a loyalty programme for the “truly committed” fans.
The exposure for the brand across traditional and online platforms would ensure continuing value generation through increased and deeper connections, Mavuso said.
