Tailings Storage Facilities

Tailings Storage Facilities are engineered structures designed to contain the waste material, known as tailings, that remains after the extraction of valuable minerals from ore during mining and mineral processing operations. These facilities are critical infrastructure in the mining industry, serving to safely store the slurry of finely ground rock, water and residual chemicals produced during ore beneficiation. In South Africa and other major mining jurisdictions, tailings storage facilities are subject to strict regulatory oversight covering design approval, operational monitoring and mine rehabilitation requirements. The management of tailings facilities also presents opportunities for job creation in engineering, environmental monitoring and rehabilitation activities. Advances in tailings management technology focus on reducing water content, improving geotechnical stability and enabling the reprocessing of tailings to recover residual minerals and reduce the environmental footprint of mining operations.
