BMW South Africa has issued a safety recall, flagged by the National Consumer Commission (NCC) on July 10, 2026, covering 10 961 units of the 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, X3 and X4 sold from 2016 onwards. Affected vehicles carry a Pinion Starter whose solenoid switch may wear, degrading starting capability or causing a short circuit with a risk of overheating and smoke. BMW advises owners to avoid the remote-start function and arrange inspection and free repair at an authorised dealership.
Opt-out registry's reach extends to B2B marketingLegal analysis of the Consumer Protection Act Amendment Regulations, 2026, effective from April 15, 2026, confirms the NCC's opt-out registry applies broadly, including to business-to-business marketing directed at large juristic persons, whose procurement teams can register pre-emptive blocks. Direct marketers must register annually, cleanse databases against the registry monthly and disclose their name, address and contact number in all communications, alongside obligations under the Protection of Personal Information Act.
FlySafair referred to tribunal over overbookingThe NCC has referred FlySafair to the National Consumer Tribunal over alleged Consumer Protection Act contraventions, with its investigation finding overbooking averaged more than 5 000 passengers across three months assessed.
