Mineral Processing

Mineral processing is the industrial practice of extracting valuable minerals and metals from ore through physical and chemical treatment. The process typically begins with crushing and grinding ore to liberate mineral particles, followed by concentration methods such as flotation, gravity separation, magnetic separation or leaching to separate valuable components from waste rock. Subsequent stages may include dewatering, filtering, smelting and refining to produce marketable concentrates or finished metal products. Mineral processing is essential to the mining industry, enabling the economic extraction of metals including copper, gold, platinum-group metals, iron, nickel, zinc and critical minerals used in batteries and renewable energy technologies. The efficiency of mineral processing directly affects the viability of mining projects, influencing recovery rates, operating costs, energy consumption and environmental footprint. Modern processing plants employ advanced technologies such as sensor-based sorting, automated control systems and hydrometallurgical techniques to improve yields and reduce waste. Environmental considerations include tailings management, water recycling, energy efficiency and the minimisation of chemical reagents. The sector is evolving to handle lower-grade ores, more complex mineralogy and stricter environmental standards. Mineral processing expertise is concentrated in major mining regions including South Africa, Australia, Canada and South America, supporting the supply chains for global manufacturing and the energy transition.
