Large Language Models

Large Language Models are a class of artificial intelligence systems built on deep neural network architectures that process and generate human language at scale. These models are trained on vast datasets comprising billions or trillions of words from diverse text sources, enabling them to understand context, generate coherent text, translate languages, answer questions and perform a wide range of natural language processing tasks. The technology relies on transformer architectures, which use attention mechanisms to weigh the importance of different words in context, allowing the models to capture complex linguistic patterns and semantic relationships. Large Language Models typically contain hundreds of millions to hundreds of billions of parameters—numerical values that the system adjusts during training to improve performance. Applications span content generation, customer service automation, code writing, research assistance, language translation and educational tools. Major technology companies and research institutions have deployed these models commercially, while concerns around computational cost, energy consumption, bias in training data and ethical use continue to shape development and deployment strategies. The technology has gained particular relevance in emerging markets, where locally trained models can support indigenous languages and cultural contexts that global systems may underserve. Adoption across sectors including telecommunications, finance, healthcare and education is accelerating as organisations seek to automate knowledge work and improve user experiences. The field emerged from decades of natural language processing research, with significant breakthroughs in model scale and capability occurring from the late 2010s onward.
