South32 has signed a binding conditional agreement to sell its aluminium, alumina and bauxite portfolio, including Hillside Aluminium and the idled Bayside smelter property in KwaZulu-Natal, to New York-listed Alcoa for an upfront $4.1-billion, plus a contingent value right of up to $750-million. The deal, which also includes Australia's Boddington mine and Worsley refinery and Brazil's Alumar and Mineração Rio do Norte assets, excludes South32's Mozal smelter in Mozambique and will make Alcoa the world's largest bauxite miner, lifting its aluminium smelting capacity by 26%.
