Fischer Tropsch

Fischer Tropsch is a catalytic chemical process that converts synthesis gas (syngas) – a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen – into liquid hydrocarbons such as synthetic fuels, waxes and chemical feedstocks. The process was developed in the 1920s by German chemists Franz Fischer and Hans Tropsch and has since become a key technology for producing synthetic liquid fuels from coal, natural gas, biomass or other carbon-containing feedstocks. Fischer Tropsch synthesis operates at elevated temperatures and pressures in the presence of metal catalysts, typically iron or cobalt, with platinum-group metals sometimes used to enhance catalyst performance and selectivity. The resulting products can be refined into high-quality diesel, jet fuel, naphtha and other petroleum substitutes with low sulphur content and favourable combustion properties. The technology has gained renewed attention in the context of energy transition and sustainable aviation fuel production, as it enables the conversion of renewable biomass or captured carbon into drop-in fuels compatible with existing infrastructure. Major commercial applications include gas-to-liquids plants that monetise stranded natural gas reserves and coal-to-liquids facilities in regions with abundant coal resources. Fischer Tropsch is also central to power-to-liquids and biomass-to-liquids pathways that aim to decarbonise transport sectors. The process remains capital-intensive and economically sensitive to feedstock costs and crude oil prices, but its ability to produce clean-burning synthetic fuels from diverse carbon sources ensures its ongoing relevance in industrial chemistry and energy strategy.
