Dense Media Separation

Dense media separation (DMS) is a mineral processing technique used to separate ore particles by relative density, exploiting differences between valuable minerals and waste rock or gangue material. The process suspends finely ground ferrosilicon or magnetite powder in water to create a synthetic fluid of a specific, controlled density, into which crushed ore is introduced. Particles denser than the medium sink, while lighter particles float, allowing efficient physical separation without chemical reagents. The technique is widely applied in the beneficiation of coal, diamonds, iron ore, chrome and other minerals where density contrasts are significant. It offers a relatively low-cost, energy-efficient alternative to flotation or magnetic separation for coarse and medium particle sizes. In South Africa, DMS is a well-established unit process in coal washing plants and diamond recovery circuits, and research bodies such as Mintek have contributed to refining its application for other commodities, including magnetite and titaniferous ores. The method's efficiency depends on medium density control, particle size distribution and plant design. DMS plants typically recycle the dense medium through magnetic separators to recover the ferrosilicon or magnetite for reuse, improving cost-effectiveness. The technology has been used industrially for decades and continues to be adapted for new orebodies and processing challenges across the mining sector.
