Climate Change

Climate change is the long-term shift in global or regional climate patterns, primarily attributed to increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases produced by human activities since the mid-twentieth century. The phenomenon encompasses rising average temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, more frequent extreme weather events, sea-level rise and shifts in ecosystems. The primary driver is the burning of fossil fuels for energy, transport and industrial processes, alongside deforestation and agricultural practices that release carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. Climate change poses significant risks to economies, infrastructure, food security, water resources and human health, particularly in vulnerable regions including much of Africa. International efforts to address climate change include the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit global warming to well below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels. Mitigation strategies focus on reducing emissions through renewable energy deployment, energy efficiency, electrification of transport and industrial decarbonisation. Adaptation measures include climate-resilient infrastructure, water management systems and agricultural practices designed to cope with changing conditions. The transition away from fossil fuels towards low-carbon energy sources is reshaping global energy markets, investment flows and industrial policy. Climate change is a central consideration in business planning, regulatory frameworks and international development agendas, driving demand for critical minerals used in renewable energy technologies and electric vehicles.
