Central African Copperbelt

The Central African Copperbelt is a major sedimentary mineral province spanning southern Democratic Republic of Congo and northern Zambia, renowned for its world-class copper and cobalt deposits. The belt extends approximately 450 km in a crescent-shaped arc from Kolwezi in the DRC through to the Zambian Copperbelt Province, with key mining centres including Lubumbashi, Kolwezi, Kitwe, Ndola and Mufulira. It ranks among the richest copper-producing regions globally, accounting for a substantial share of world cobalt output and significant copper production. The geology is characterised by stratiform copper–cobalt mineralisation hosted in Neoproterozoic sedimentary rocks of the Katanga Supergroup, deposited in a failed rift basin around 880 to 540 million years ago. Mining in the region dates back more than a century, with large-scale industrial extraction beginning in the early twentieth century under colonial administration. Today the Copperbelt supports a diverse mix of major multinational mining companies, mid-tier producers and artisanal operations, underpinning the economies of both host countries. Infrastructure including smelters, refineries, rail links and power supply has been developed to service the mining industry. The region's strategic importance has grown with rising global demand for copper in electrification and renewable energy, and for cobalt in battery technologies. Exploration continues to delineate extensions of known orebodies and new targets within the belt, reinforcing its status as a cornerstone of African mining.
