British Columbia

British Columbia is a province of Canada located on the country's Pacific coast, with Victoria serving as its capital and Vancouver as its largest city. The province spans approximately 944 735 square kilometres, making it Canada's third-largest province by area, and has a population of about five-million people. British Columbia's economy is diverse, with key sectors including forestry, mining, natural gas extraction, technology, film production, tourism and fisheries. The province holds substantial natural gas reserves in its northeast region, particularly in the Montney and Horn River basins, which have positioned it as a significant player in Canada's LNG export ambitions. Mining remains important to the provincial economy, with production of copper, gold, coal, molybdenum and other minerals. Hydroelectric power generation is a cornerstone of the energy system, with the province deriving more than 90% of its electricity from renewable sources, primarily large dams operated by BC Hydro. British Columbia's deepwater Pacific ports, including the Port of Vancouver, serve as critical gateways for Canadian exports to Asian markets. The province is home to numerous First Nations with constitutionally protected rights, and resource development increasingly requires consultation and partnership with Indigenous communities. British Columbia joined the Canadian Confederation in 1871 and has evolved into one of the country's most economically dynamic and culturally diverse regions.
