Substance abuse control specialist Alco-Safe showcased wall-mounted breathalysers linked to facial recognition software at A-OSH Expo 2026, enabling workers to be identified and tested before being granted site access. The company also introduced the latest version of its AlcoBlow screening device, which can test up to 18 people a minute and incorporates Bluetooth connectivity for digital record-keeping and reporting, with a rechargeable battery option designed to support high-throughput screening environments.
Major delivery network implements compulsory daily alcohol screening for 15 000 driversAlco-Safe has partnered with a major national delivery network to introduce compulsory daily alcohol screening across more than 15 000 drivers, mostly motorcycle couriers, before they start last-mile deliveries. Breathalysers are installed at entry points of each hub, integrated with biometric turnstiles, providing instant feedback via green or red indicator lights; drivers who test positive are escorted to a private area for confirmation testing and, if confirmed, suspended for a mandatory period with access to rehabilitation support.
Alco-Safe achieves first private SANAS accreditation for breathalyser calibrationAlco-Safe has become the first privately owned laboratory in South Africa to achieve accreditation by the South African National Accreditation System for breathalyser calibration, and the only privately owned provider accredited to manage the full lifecycle of handheld breathalysers from sales and servicing to calibration under a single framework. The accreditation strengthens the legal defensibility of test results, giving employers confidence that alcohol testing outcomes will stand up to scrutiny when challenged at the CCMA or Labour Court.
