Athabasca Basin

The Athabasca Basin is a sedimentary basin located in northern Saskatchewan and northeastern Alberta, Canada, renowned as one of the world's richest uranium-producing regions. The basin covers approximately 100 000 km² and is characterised by Proterozoic sandstone formations overlying older basement rocks. It hosts some of the highest-grade uranium deposits globally, with ore grades often exceeding 10% uranium oxide and in some cases reaching over 20%, far above the global average of less than 1%. Major producing mines in the basin include McArthur River, Cigar Lake and Key Lake, operated by Cameco and Orix. The basin's uranium mineralisation is typically found at the unconformity between the sandstone cover and the underlying crystalline basement, at depths ranging from 200 m to over 600 m. Exploration and mining activity in the Athabasca Basin dates to the 1960s, with commercial production beginning in the 1970s. The region accounts for a significant share of global primary uranium supply and remains a focus of ongoing exploration and development, including advanced in situ recovery techniques. The basin's remote location and environmental sensitivity require careful management of mining operations and regulatory oversight by provincial and federal authorities.
