African Rail Industry Association

The African Rail Industry Association is an industry body representing stakeholders in the rail sector across the African continent. The association's mandate includes promoting the development, modernisation and expansion of rail infrastructure and manufacturing capacity in Africa. It brings together rail operators, manufacturers, suppliers and policymakers to advance the interests of the rail industry and support the growth of passenger and freight rail networks. The association advocates for localisation, skills development and job creation within the rail sector, aligning its objectives with continental development frameworks such as AU Agenda 2063. It engages with government departments, including South Africa's Department of Trade, Industry and Competition and Department of Transport, as well as entities such as Transnet and the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa. The association works to foster collaboration between African countries and international rail manufacturers, including companies such as Alstom and consortia like Gibela Rail Consortium. It addresses challenges including unemployment, reindustrialisation and the need for technical skills to support rail projects. The association serves as a platform for dialogue on policy, investment and best practice in rail development. Its activities support the broader goal of building integrated, efficient and sustainable rail systems across Africa. The association's work is central to efforts to unlock the economic and social benefits of rail transport on the continent.
