Zuma to attend summit in Japan
President Jacob Zuma will leave for Japan on Saturday for the Fifth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (Ticad-V) Summit, the presidency said.
The summit would be from June 1 and June 3, with an extra day for other work.
Cabinet ministers accompanying him would include International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies, and Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane.
The presidency described Ticad as a strategic partnership between Africa and Japan, which was launched in 1993 as a consultative forum for development help for Africa.
This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the Ticad process, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity and the African Union (AU).
The theme of the summit this year would be "Hand in Hand with a Dynamic Africa".
"South Africa's participation in the upcoming Ticad meetings is premised on the AU strategic objective of ensuring that all global partnerships with Africa should support the African development priorities, while also strengthening Africa's participation in global affairs as an equal partner," the presidency said.
African heads of state and government, Japan, and the Ticad partners, were expected to adopt the "Ticad-V declaration" and a five-year plan to guide co-operation between Africa and Japan between 2013 and 2017.
It was envisaged that Zuma would meet Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to review bilateral relations and exchange views on critical regional and global issues.
