ZET launches expression of interest process for its proposed LNG import terminal
Special purpose vehicle the Zululand Energy Terminal (ZET) is formally inviting expressions of interest (EoI) from engineering, procurement and construction contractors for the development of its proposed liquified natural gas (LNG) import terminal at the Port of Richards Bay, in KwaZulu-Natal.
The EoI provides qualified engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractors that meet the specified minimum requirements with an opportunity to participate in the delivery of this large-scale strategic energy asset and forms the first phase of a structured and transparent selection process.
The process will later progress through a request for information and a request for proposal, with the aim to assess contractor capabilities and promote fair and open participation.
The facility will enable the importation of LNG and support the development of associated gas infrastructure to supply both industry and power generation.
EPC execution will be subject to ZET's localisation and economic development objectives, and successful contractors will be expected to support local supplier participation, skills development and the use of local labour.
Qualifying parties will be included in the project’s vendor database and may be shortlisted for subsequent phases as potential preferred contractors or subcontractors.
This terminal is intended to serve as South Africa's primary gateway for LNG importation, supporting a reliable energy supply and the diversification of the country's energy infrastructure
Developed as a joint venture between logistics service provider Vopak Terminal Durban and State-owned freight transport and logistics company Transnet Pipelines, the ZET project is expected to be South Africa’s first LNG import facility.
The consortium will design, develop, construct, finance, operate and maintain the terminal in the South Dunes Precinct at the Port of Richards Bay over a 25-year concession period.
