Project Description
The ZTK project was initially proposed in 1995 as a Zambia–Tanzania interconnector and later became ZTK power interconnector project in 2001, when Kenya joined the project.
The project includes the two-phase construction of a 400 kV transmission line from Kabwe, in Zambia, to Isinya, in Kenya. The first phase, with a route length of 1 287 km, will include the 958 kV, double-circuit Isinya–Namanga–Arusha–Singida–Iringa link; and the 373 km, 330 kV, single-circuit Pensulo–Kasama link.
The second phase will include the 1 441 km, 400 kV, double-circuit, Iringa–Mbeya–Zambia/Tanzania border–Kasama–Kabwe link.
Value
The project is estimated at $1.4-billion.
Duration
The Pensulo–Kasama link was expected to be completed in June 2015.
The Isinya–Namanga–Arusha–Singida–Iringa link is expected to be completed by December 2016.
The Iringa–Mbeya–Zambia/Tanzania border–Kasama–Kabwe link is expected to be completed by December 2018.
