Project Description
The project involves the design and construction of an oil-fired power plant, a seawater desalination unit and associated facilities at Yanbu, in Al Madinah province, on the western coast of Saudi Arabia.
The power plant will have an installed capacity of 3 100 MW and will make use of heavy fuel oil (HFO) as the main fuel source, with diesel oil used only for start-up.
The plant will be connected to the Saudi Electricity Company grid through a 380 kV substation, which will also be built on site.

The project is estimated at $3-billion.
Duration
The plant is expected to enter commercial operation in 2016.
Latest Developments
Alstom has been awarded a contract to supply equipment for the Yanbu Phase 3 power and desalination plant. The contract is worth about $972-million.
Alstom’s scope of work includes the basic engineering of the power block, advisory services during detailed engineering and procurement, supervisory services during construction and commissioning and the delivery of the main equipment for 5 × 620 MW units, including the steam turbines and generators, the HFO-fired supercritical boilers, electrostatic precipitators and the flue gas desulphurisation system.
