Xiangyuan mine, China
Name of the Mine
Xiangyuan mine.
Location
Daoxian County, Yongzhou, Hunan province, China.
Mine Owner/s
Global metals and mining company Zijin Mining Group.
Brief Description
The hard-rock lithium-containing polymetallic mine is one of the few large-scale, low-grade hard-rock lithium operations in China, with a significant resource base and great development potential.
Brief History
The project was originally developed as a tin-, tungsten- and rubidium-focused polymetallic mine, with lithium treated as an associated mineral. As the higher-grade tin and tungsten resources neared depletion, mining was suspended. In June 2022, Zijin announced the acquisition of 71.14% of Houdao Mining, which held 100% of the Xiangyuan mining right, and later completed a second transaction so that it held 100% of the mine.
Primary Metals/Minerals
Lithium.
Secondary Metals/Minerals
Tin, tungsten, rubidium, and cesium.
Geology/Mineralisation
Xiangyuan is Greisen-type low-grade lithium-containing polymetallic deposit.
Reserves
Total proven and probable mineral reserves as at December 31, 2025, were stated at one-million tonnes grading 1.11% lithium carbonate equivalent.
Resources
The mine comprises total mineral resources of 1.43-million tonnes grading 1.06% lithium carbonate equivalent.
Type of Mine
Openpit.
Mining Method
The mine uses gravity and high-intensity magnetic separation and flotation to recover lithium product.
Major Infrastructure/Equipment
The mine includes a five-million-tonne-a-year processing operation and a supporting battery grade lithium carbonate refinery.
Prospects
The five-million-tonne-a-year mining and processing project and the supporting battery-grade lithium carbonate smelting plant was completed and started production at the end of 2025. After reaching designated production, the mine will be able to produce 30 000 t/y of battery-grade lithium carbonate.
