PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Australian oil and gas major Woodside has discovered gas at its Shwe Yee Htun-1 exploration well, in the Rakhine basin offshore Myanmar.

The well targeted one of many identified channel complexes that run over a large anticlinical feature called the Saung Anticline, and was spudded in November last year, reaching its original target depth of 4 810 m on December 23.

Woodside CEO Peter Coleman said on Monday that he was pleased with the successful evaluation of the prospect, which provided evidence of a working petroleum system in the Rakhine basin deep water.

“Further analysis will be undertaken to understand the full potential of the play, but this derisks a number of leads which will now be matured.”

Coleman said that the discovery was an encouraging outcome for future exploration and appraisal activity in the area.

Woodside holds an interest in six blocks in the Rakhine basin, making up 46 000 km2 and representing 20% of the company’s global exploration acreage.
