PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Iron-ore developer Winmar Resources has been awarded a mining lease at its Hamersley iron-ore project, in Western Australia, securing the title on which the company would develop the Winmar deposit.

The mining lease covers 1 042 ha and incorporates the Winmar deposit, which is estimated to host a mineral resource of 343.2-million tonnes, grading 54.5% iron.

Winmar would conduct infill and extension drilling to further understand the characteristics of the orebody and to upgrade the resource, but initial indications were that the mineralisation remained open in most directions.

Winmar nonexecutive chairperson Alex Alexander said on Friday that outside of the Winmar deposit, the Hamersley project remained under-explored; however, the company has identified highly prospective targets which would be subject to further brownfield exploration work.

Winmar was also working on a prefeasibility study and the preparation of a mine management plan for the Hamersley project.

A scoping study into the Hamersley iron joint venture (JV) between ASX-listed Winmar and Cazaly Resources, has indicated that the project was economically viable and based on the current mineral resource of 42.6-million tonnes, at 55.2% iron, the project could sustain an initial two-million-tonne-a-year direct shipping ore project.
