PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Coal miner Whitehaven has reported a 29% decline in run-of-mine (RoM) production during the three months to March, compared with the previous corresponding period.

The miner has previously said that operational issues at the Narrabri mine and geotechnical challenges at the Rocglen operation, both in New South Wales, would affect production during the March quarter.

As a result, RoM production was down to 1.8-million tonnes during the quarter, compared with the 2.5-million tonnes produced in the previous corresponding period, while saleable coal was down to 2.2-million tonnes, compared with the 2.3-million tonnes in the March 2013 quarter.

Whitehaven reported on Tuesday that at the Narrabri mine, RoM coal production reached 675 000 t during the quarter, owing to a longwall change-out. However, saleable coal production for the quarter was higher at 949 000 t, as RoM coal stocks were processed.

Total opencut RoM production was 9% lower than the corresponding period at 1.13-million tonnes, as weather and mine sequence scheduling impacted on production.

The Rocglen operation produced 239 000 t RoM production and 180 000 t of saleable coal production, while the Werris Creek operation delivered 518 000 t of RoM coal and 603 000 t of saleable coal for the quarter. The Tarrawonga mine delivered 374 000 t of RoM production and 502 000 t of saleable coal production.

Whitehaven has previously downgraded its full-year expectations to between 9.8-million tonnes and 10-million tonnes of saleable coal during the full year, instead of the previously forecast 10.7-million tonnes, as a result of the operational issues during the March quarter.
