JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Iron-ore miner Western Desert Resources has officially opened its Roper Bar project, in Western Australia, announcing that its first iron-ore shipment was planned for December.

“We have come a long way from discovery to production within a timeframe and budget that we are extremely proud of,” said Western Desert MD Norm Gardner.

“Anyone who knows what it takes to see a bulk commodity project through to production will be aware of the huge effort that is made by the many people involved in the project.”

At the mine site, some 250 000 t of direct shipping grade ore material has been stockpiled and delivery of the product would start shortly. Loading of their first ship with the ore was scheduled for December 16.

At full capacity, the Roper Bar project would have a 1.5-million-tonne-a-year capacity, which would be increased to three-million tonnes a year by the third year of operation.

Gardner said on Monday that Western Desert was now focused on delivering its Roper Red iron to the market.
