Western Cape Dec visitor numbers rise to 3.9m
Major tourist attractions in the Western Cape attracted 3.9-million tourists during December – an 8.9% increase on December 2011, Western Cape Tourism Minister Alan Winde reported on Tuesday.
The largest growth in visitor numbers year-on-year was experienced in the Cape West Coast region, which saw a 44.1% increase to 38 656 tourists for the last month of the year.
The Knysna National Park region experienced the most significant drop – with visitor numbers down 8.4% from 795 in December 2011 to 695 in December last year, while Robben Island also experienced a 4.7% downturn in tourist volumes to 41 259.
The Cape Overberg region also posted a decline in tourism numbers for the period, which was largely blamed on recent farmworker protest action in the region.
“We have observed a significant rise in the number of visitors using rail transport in the province, which is demonstrative of the Western Cape’s reputation as a destination with good access to public transport,” Winde said.
He added that the province expected increasing use of public transport networks as Cape Town rolled out its MyCity bus service.
However, the province reported decreased arrivals volumes across the board through both the Cape Town International and George airport year-on-year.
Some 78 204 visitors were reported at the international arrivals terminal at the Cape Town International airport – 10% fewer than the previous year, while there was an 8% decrease in domestic arrivals at George airport, which registered 32 698 visitors.
The tourism industry currently accounts for more than 10% of the country’s gross domestic product, with the aim of increasing this contribution to 15%, Winde said.
