Wesdome Gold Mines discovers new gold occurrence near Quebec mine
TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Canada-based Wesdome Gold Mines on Wednesday said it had discovered a new gold occurrence near its Kiena mine in Val d'Or, Quebec.
The company said a land-based surface exploration drill programme of the Presqu'ile sector located 1.4 km north-west of the Kiena mine was started in January 2012, to verify the exploration potential along the Norbenite-Marbenite break, which was host to several past and current producing gold mines including Malartic Hygrade, Norlartic, Kierens, Marban, Kiena and Goldex.
The new gold mineralised system spans about 200 m in length and continues to at least 300 m below surface. The mineralised veins are generally oriented at 300° azimuth with a 60° dip north-east and remain open along strike and at depth.
“Early encouraging drill results demonstrate the exploration merit for continued follow-up drilling to verify the dimensions and internal geometry of the gold mineralised system,” the company said in a statement.
Examples of grades found within the system included 5.04 g/t gold over 6.8 m, 30.39 g/t over 3 m and 71.03 g/t over 2.9 m.
“This is a high-grade, multi-vein system in a strong structure. It requires detailed sectional drilling and patience. This discovery serves to highlight the tremendous exploration potential of our strategically-located, large land package,” Wesdome VP for exploration George Mannard said.
For the full year 2012, Wesdome produced about 55 800 oz of gold. Its Eagle River mine, in Ontario, produced 31 600 oz of gold, the Mishi mine, also in Ontario, produced 5 300 oz of gold and the Kiena mine produced 18 900 oz.
Wesdome expects to produce more than 70 000 oz of gold this year.
