JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) –JSE-listed Wescoal Mining is set to start mining at its Intibane colliery following the receipt of all necessary approvals, including a water-use license.

Work on mine establishment had already started, despite protracted delays in the issuance of approvals, with first coal at the Witbank coalfield-based operation expected to be produced by June.

Intibane had an estimated 1.88-million tons of coal and a strip ratio of 1.5:1, which would substantially reduce the cost of production, as strip ratios at the company’s Khanyisa colliery were currently at 4:1.

Despite the delay in the commissioning of Intibane, management was satisfied with Wescoal’s production for 2013, having produced 1.3-million tons of coal for the period ended March 31.

Wescoal’s trading arm Chandler Coal, meanwhile, sold 413 165 t of coal for the period.

Results for the year ended March 31, 2013, were expected to be released by the middle of June.
