Three of the Western Cape’s poorest communities will get free WiFi access early next year, as the Western Cape rolls out a R3-million broadband pilot project.

The provincial Department of Economic Development and Tourism (Dedat) is seeking a nonprofit organisation (NPO) to manage the two-month pilot initiative and has invited potential bidders to submit their proposals by December 6.

The department will, through grant funding to the NPO, kick off the two-month project in January, with the injection of R1-million into each of the three yet-to-be-selected WiFi zones during the pilot phase.

Western Cape Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism Alan Winde on Thursday said the project marked the start of rolling out affordable Internet access across the province under the department’s Western Cape Broadband Initiative.

“The Free WiFi project will assist us in developing the most effective way of delivering Internet access to residents. The aim of this pilot is to pioneer a model we can replicate across the province,” he explained.

Starting this weekend, Dedat will advertise the call for proposals, detailing the application process, in several weekend newspapers.
