International water-treatment solutions specialist Degrémont, a subsidiary of France-based utility company Suez Environment, is committed to supplying sustainable, efficient and cost-effective water management services to the oil refinery and petrochemicals industry.

The company supplies robust and consistent water treatment facilities and services, adhering to the specific standards of mature oil refineries and petrochemicals complexes.

Degrémont explains that wastewater treatment is one of the main requirements for oil refineries and petrochemicals plants, as wastewater must be treated before discharge or reuse. The waste- water quantity and quality generated depends on the type and quality of the crude oil being processed, as well as the process units inside the complex and the applications for its by-products.

The company states that the water used to supply industrial processes and utilities represents the largest portion of water- related expenditure at an industrial site. This water is used in the cooling systems, boilers and production processes. In addition, the quality and quantity requirements vary from one industry to another and from one site to another.

Meanwhile, Degrémont points out that industry bodies are increasingly faced with global environmental legislation aimed at pollution prevention and control, compounded by the increasing pressure to optimise operational costs. Therefore, the oil refining and petrochemicals industry needs to call in specialists who can assist in implementing and improving industrial water-cycle management.

Water treatment facilities are essential to ensure a flawless production process and they are, therefore, becoming increasingly more complex: “We understand the specific challenges that clients face on a daily basis and we provide tailor-made services,” says the company.

The benefits of optimum water management include being able to guarantee reliable industrial processes and industry-compliant water qualities; the long-term operation and maintenance of water and treatment facilities in refineries and petrochemicals plants; as well as mobile water treatment solutions for emergency and long-term needs.

Meanwhile, Degrémont was commissioned in 2009 to construct an industrial effluent treatment plant for Chinese oil and gas company PetroChina’s refinery in Chengdu, Sichuan province. Degrémont attributes the Chengdu plant’s success, operating since late 2013, to the research and development efforts of Degrémont’s Oil & Petrochem Centre of Excellence.

The Chengdu treatment plant was designed to ensure that its effluents meet stringent environmental standards specific to the petrochemicals industry, particularly in terms of chemical oxygen demand. Degrémont explains that a sewage plant must be able to reuse more than two-thirds of the wastewater it receives, which is a challenge, owing to Chengdu’s limited water resources.

Degrémont has mitigated this challenge by using an advanced technology called Oxyblue, which offers optimal water quality, allowing for the water to be reused and released into sensitive environments. It combines the technologies of ozonation, which brings the organic material in contact with ozone, and biofiltration, which completes the biological treatment of the wastewater.

Oxyblue technology improves the performance of the waste- water treatment process and degrades pollutants that are usually difficult to treat . “This cutting-edge technology is proving to be economically competitive. It requires far less ozone than competing products that use extensive ozonation techno- logies, thereby effectively reducing running costs,” concludes Degrémont.
