PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Western Australian state government on Friday announced that it has successfully halved the assessment timeframes for exploration programme of work applications.

The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) in February announced plans to streamline the approval timeframe target from 30 to 15 business days, starting on July 1.

“The department is off to a flying start, having successfully met the new application timeframes in just the first month,” said Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston.

“The reduction will have a direct benefit to the mining industry and will promote economic activity in the regions. The state government supports an efficient regulatory system that provides appropriate environmental safeguards, we will continue to streamline regulation of the resource sector to reduce barriers and create jobs.”

Johnston said that the fast-tracking of new mining opportunities was a key part of the government’s recovery plan to keep Western Australia in a strong economic position.
