PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Western Australian state government has vowed to support iron-ore miners in the region, as commodity prices continued to fall.

Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Marmion this week said that the state government was doing everything possible to back mining businesses and help them to maintain employment during the commodity downturn.

“We are behind you 110%. In the face of international volatility, now more than ever is the time for a calm and measured approach and working side-by-side for the long-term benefit of all,” Marmion said.

“We are all in this together and our government has a strong track record of responsible support for industry. This is a time not only for innovation, but for communication. Rest assured, my door is always open.”

To date, the state government has introduced a three-year rebate programme on magnetite royalties, which began in April 2013, and a similar 12-month relief package for junior haematite miners.

The government is also assessing a number of amendments to the Mining Act to remove duplication, inject greater certainty in decision-making processes, and speed up decisions on projects, while freezing port tariff increases at Utah Point, in Port Hedland.
