Despite rationalising the number of sector bodies supported by the Western Cape province owing to budgetary constraints and a revision of the province’s “strategic direction”, Western Cape Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism Alan Winde says there has been “major growth” in the job numbers of several key industries over the past few years.

Speaking at a Sector Connect function, in Cape Town, on Thursday, he said the business-process-outsourcing industry was driving a considerable boost in job creation for residents of the province, especially for the youth.

“Currently, there are just over 40 000 people employed in the industry, which is worth an estimated R8-billion to our economy. By next year, the job numbers are expected to grow to 52 245. By 2016, it’s expected the sector will employ 65 303 people,” Winde commented.

He added that the information communication technology (ICT) industry was another priority sector, employing 30 000 people and contributing R3-billion to national gross domestic product.

“The Bandwidth Barn, a partnership between the Western Cape government and the Cape Information and Technology Initiative, has played an active role in supporting ICT entrepreneurship in the Western Cape economy.

“Between 2006 and 2010, Bandwidth Barn tenants and over 50 successful graduates added more than R800-million a year to the region’s economy, supporting almost 2 500 direct and indirect jobs,” Winde commented.

In the 2012/13 fiscal year, various support programmes offered by the centre provided skills development opportunities for 96 businesses.

Other industry highlights over the period included growing the Western Cape oil and gas sector into a R2-billion-a-year industry while training over 1 000 artisans, as well as establishing the R400-million Cape Town Film Studios.
