Telecommunications giant Vodacom on Tuesday announced plans to inject R1-billion in the current financial year to upgrade its network in Gauteng.

The company would focus on upgrading and increasing third-generation (3G) coverage in the major townships of Gauteng, with the addition of more than 400 new 3G sites expected by March.

“The upgrade will increase network capacity and provide improved voice quality and mobile data speeds in areas such as Soweto, Orange Farm, Alexandra, Tembisa, Mamelodi, Atteridgeville and Soshanguve,” Vodacom managing executive for operations in Gauteng Shane Hibbard said in a statement.

Another 600 new long-term evolution (LTE) sites were also expected to go live by April, growing Gauteng’s current LTE coverage from 25% of the company’s overall sites in Gauteng to 38%.

“The areas [in which] we will be focusing on increasing LTE coverage are the business hubs and urban areas, such as Pretoria, Bryanston and Rosebank, as well as in the major townships,” he explained.

This followed on Vodacom’s plans to increase its investment in the network across South Africa by 30%, which saw the addition of another 293 3G sites and 473 LTE sites across South Africa during the quarter ended June 30.
