JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) - JSE-listed Village Main Reef on Monday confirmed that an extended underground sit-in by 918 workers at the Monarch decline shaft of its Consolidated Murchison (ConsMurch) mine, in Limpopo, has ended.

Workers returned to surface on July 20, following a joint appeal from management, the office of the Chief Inspector of Mines, the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR), unions and the South African Police Services (SAPS).

Management had also engaged the services of an independent mediator to resolve the dispute between the parties.

The gold miner said in a statement that the unprotected strike had resulted in revenue losses of some R10.5-million for the company, while employees had lost a total of R2-million in wages.

The strike, which started on July 10, began as a sit-in by about 100 employees, mainly members of the National Union of Mineworkers, who demanded either a lump sum payout from an employee share trust or dividend payments as participants in the trust.

“Village acknowledges the support of the SAPS, government, through the DMR, and from the unions, during this time,” the company said in a statement.
