Vaal sewer plant to undergo capacity upgrades
South African water utility Rand Water’s Sedibeng Regional Sanitation Scheme will be undergoing major upgrades to unlock residential and business developments in the Vaal area, as well as parts of the south of Johannesburg, the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs said on Thursday.
The sanitation plant was operating at about 151 megalitres, well above its 100 megalitre capacity, bringing multiple property developments to a standstill.
The current upgrade would ensure an expansion in capacity of 50 megalitres by 2017, as well as another 50 megalitres by 2018. This was expected to unlock major property developments and further prevent overflow of sewage into the Vaal and local streams.
About 12 government residential housing developments, with potential to yield over 50 000 units for needy households, were currently affected by the shortage of capacity to treat sewage. Residential housing developments such the Vaal River City development, Savana City and Sebokeng extension 28 – which forms part of the Boiketlong megaproject - were affected.
Private sector property developments and some business projects in the area were also negatively impacted.
Earlier this year, Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane said the upgrade of the plant would be carried out in various stages.
This entailed the refurbishment of the existing infrastructure in Emfuleni and Midvaal local municipalities to reduce the occurrence of spillages of raw sewage, while consistently maintaining better effluent quality from the wastewater treatment works (WWTWs); the extension of the existing wastewater infrastructure in both municipalities to tackle undercapacity of the WWTWs; and the construction of a new WWTW around the Sedibeng district municipality.
She added that the project would create about 6 000 job opportunities for residents.
