University of Fort Hare (UFH) student accommodation project.

The project is located in Alice, in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province.

Project Description
The largest student housing project ever undertaken by a South African public university is under development at the UFH.

Phase 1 of the project was completed in 2014 and resulted in 610 beds being made available to the university. Phase 2 will add another to 2 047 beds. The student village includes a new student centre and a dedicated postgraduate accommodation block.

Capital Expenditure
The project is valued at R400-million and is being funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training, the Development Bank of Southern Africa and the European Union.

Planned Start/End Date
The project is scheduled for completion in December 2020.

Latest Developments
Following two months of hard lockdown in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the development of the student village at the UFH has resumed.

Stag African is responsible for the development. 

Thus far, 854 beds have been added in Phase 2.

Completion of the project in December 2020 will bring the total number of beds handed over to the university to 2 047.
