JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is expected to formally declare a dispute regarding the gold wage negotiations and refer the matter to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) for mediation, the Chamber of Mines (CoM) said on Friday.

The CoM confirmed that the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) and the NUM had again rejected South African gold producers’ final offer Thursday.

The rejected final offer, tabled on July 30, was made on the basis that all unions accepted it – the miners offered a wage increase of up to 17% last week, while the two biggest unions demanded raises of around 70% to more than 100%.

In line with conditions shared with the unions, the gold companies had now reverted to the firm offer made on June 29. This offer proposed that entry-level employees receive wage increases of between 7% and 13%.

“At the outset of wage negotiations, we made our intention clear to secure a wage agreement that would ensure the sustainability of the industry. We welcome the opportunity to continue to engage with the unions under the auspices of the CCMA in a constructive manner,” CoM negotiator Dr Elize Strydom said.
